Tuna surprise update

From the Divine Ms. M, font of wisdom and vegan extrordinaire, two more links for your further reading pleasure:

The first is from Salon.com and is an observation piece from Arianna Huffington. It requires that you view an ad to receive a Salon.com daypass. I think it’s worth it and you can read all the backlog of The K Chronicles while you’re there.

The second is from the Organic Consumers Association and is about the mad cow/mad deer issues facing the US animal husbandry industry. There are hundreds of links to news stories, editorials and press releases. I haven’t read the whole site (would take days), but the stuff off the top looks good. And the Divine Ms. M’s brother who is a noted vegan writer and activist has good things to say about it.

Keifel and I have discussed the pitfalls of food writing and awareness. It makes you really think about what’s on your plate and what’s going into your mouth. He is a devoted carnivore and I can appreciate that. We have decided as a household to buy only free-range, vegetarian-fed, organic meats. It means a significant reduction in what we can afford to buy. But, I think it is a commitment to something larger. Everyone in the world is not going to become a vegetarian or vegan, but we can move toward a more sustainable, more humane and safer way of raising food animals. Choosing organic, humane sources of meat helps create a market for those farmers willing to make the extra effort. And, as it is increasingly more clear to me, this issue is as much about money as it is anything else.
